Notes :

1. Timetable

The closing date for applications each year is 31 January.

The selection panel meets in late March.

Successful candidates will be notified as soon as possible after the Trustees' meeting in late March.

Awards are tenable from 1 April of that year to 31 March of the following year.

2. UK Visiting Fellowships and UK Travel Awards

Candidates wishing to apply for these fellowships must contact the institution(s) to which they hope to be attached before submitting their application, to ensure that their proposed plan of training, study or research can be accommodated and to gain the receiving institution's agreement in principle to their proposed visit.

Candidates must submit documentation indicating the receiving institution's agreement to their proposed visit.

3. Small Study and Research Grants (India)

Applicants are required to submit a statement of the detailed costs, itinerary and timetable of their project, at the time of their application. This statement must be countersigned by the applicant's academic supervisor or other guide or guarantor.

If successful, the candidate will be paid the first Rs 12,500/- initially. At the end of the project the award holder must submit a full report of the work carried out, including the academic results of the study undertaken, both in hard copy and electronically.

The award holder must also submit a statement of accounts at the conclusion of the project. . This report must be countersigned by the supervisor, guide or guarantor. On receipt of these reports the award-holder will be eligible to receive the final Rs. 7,500/- of the award.

If the award has contributed to a larger piece of work, e.g. the dissertation for a degree, the award holder is requested to supply a copy of the full dissertation. The Trust will retain the copy of this report. This report must be countersigned by the award holder's supervisor.

Award holders who have submitted their final reports will receive a signed certificate and will become associates of the Nehru Trust for the Indian Collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

4. Small Study and Research Grants (UK)

These grants may be applied for in association with an application for a UK Visiting Fellowship or a UK Travel Award, or can be applied for as a separate grant.

5. India Travel Awards

Applicants for these awards should indicate the sources of the funds for their travel to and from India.

Testimonials
In Section 20 of the Application form, please enter the names and addresses of at least two senior persons acquainted with your academic and / or professional work whom you have asked to write in support of your application. These referees must indicate your academic fitness and general suitability to undertake your proposed course of professional training, study, education or research.

Please fill in Part I of the reference form and send it with a copy of your application and the instructions below to each of your referees requesting that the testimonial be returned directly to either The Secretary, Nehru Trust for the Indian Collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum, or (in the case of India Travel Awards only) to Ms Rosemary Crill, NTICVA, Asian Department, Victoria & Albert Museum, London SW7 2RL to reach him/her no later than 31 January.

Your application will not be considered unless at least two testimonials from your nominated referees have been received by The Secretary, 'Nehru Trust for the Indian Collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum by 31 January.

Proforma for Estimate of Expenses
Applicants for Small Study and Research Grants (India) should also complete and return the Proforma for Estimate of Expenses, which should be countersigned by their employer or academic supervisor.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications in late March or early April

2. Since the awards are highly competitive, it would be most helpful if you could give your frank opinion about the applicants academic qualifications and proposal for study, training or research. It would be especially helpful if you could assess the viability and importance of the proposed training, study or research programme and the applicants particular qualifications for undertaking it. It is not helpful to have general character references since the Trust is concerned to identify applicants of outstanding merit and research or professional potential, judged by the highest international standards.
